So long, farewall, auf Wiedersehen, adieu…

Rock Candy closed its doors on January 31, 2009.  (Well, more to the point, eight years of epically bad government led to a deep recession that ultimately closed Rock Candy’s doors on January 31, 2009.)  Thanks to everyone who loved the store.  We loved it too.  Please, please, please: shop local.

It’s well past “beginning” to look a lot like Christmas!

But if you’re anything like us, you haven’t done much about this yet.  Don’t worry.  We’ll be open every day between now and the 24th for your gift-procuring needs.  (If you like to take any farther down to the wire than that, you’re on your own.)  We have those small but special (and sweet!) indulgences that are just the right size for most folks’ wallets this year.

We just got a delivery of Pembra’s Sweet Treats!  Hurry over to get Lauraville’s best stocking stuffers: two-packs of Toasted Almond Banana Clusters, Chocolate Coffee Buttercreams, and Coconut Buttercreams.  Or you can put an assortment box under the tree - you don’t even need to wrap it!  Each pretty white box has the signature bright pink Pembra’s label, a red bow, and a little note from the chocolatiers themselves.  This is the perfect gift for someone who loves great chocolate and loves local artisans.  Pembra’s makes their small batches of fresh, delicious candies right here in Lauraville.

We also have special festive cello gift bags of your favorite gummies, hard candy, jellybeans, and Christmas peppermint pillows.  Got a Mike & Ike’s lover you want to impress with pretty packaging?  We can make that happen.  Pick anything on our bulk candy wall and we’ll turn it into a present for a total of $6.50.

For your adventurous loved ones, we’ve got our best-selling Vosges Bacon Bar and other exotic flavors, plus  those gorgeous purple libraries of mini Vosges bars if your sister-in-law just can’t choose a favorite.  Pick up some frosting-scented lotion, chocolate dusting powder, or a zombie brain gelatin mold to round out the gift.  You will be the only person who comes bearing a hostess gift of a bacon bar and a zombie brain, we assure you.

So! Many! Upcoming Events at Rock Candy!

This Sunday at Rock Candy: Basketball! “What’s this?” you say. “Rock Candy has a basketball court? Why, what DOESN’T go on at Rock Candy?” Well, the answer to that is: basketball. Basketball does not go on at Rock Candy. At least not the kind where you break a sweat. However, if you want to watch an excellent basketball documentary on a screen big enough for you to really enjoy the action… well, my friends, THAT does go on at Rock Candy. This Sunday at 2:00, we’re showing “Gunnin’ for That Number 1 Spot”:

Directed by Adam Yauch (MCA of the Beastie Boys), the documentary trails young basketball stars on the fast track to the NBA, as they are being groomed to be in the spotlight of a multi-million dollar game. Combining Yauch’s unique directing style with raw hip hop music, GUNNIN’ highlights these soon to be NBA All Stars.

Seats are free for this one, but they’re limited, so please let us know you’re coming by emailing info@rockcandybaltimore.com or calling 443-919-4527.

The Sweet Stocking Workshop! On Friday, November 28, from 2:00 to 4:00, our good friend Meaghan (best known for the gorgeous Sugar High line of earrings you can now find right next to Joel’s head at the register) will be hosting a stocking workshop for kids. Bring your little ones in to decorate Christmas stockings, and if you leave them with us at the end of the day, we’ll have Santa make an early stop through Baltimore and fill them with candy so you can pick them up on December 20. (We have connections - Santa loves the Bread & Chocolate bar.) The workshop is $5 per kid; please take a look at the flyer below for all the details.

Cocoa, S’mores, and the Miracle on Main Street! On Saturday, December 6, as Hamilton and Lauraville celebrate our “Miracle on Main Street” with Holidays on Harford, we invite you to come in from the cold for a little while and get cozy at Rock Candy. After Santa makes his last stop at 2:30, we’ll warm you up with Vosges’ spicy Aztec hot cocoa, and we’ll be bringing our own special fancy touch to classic s’mores. You thought they were tasty with plain old Hershey bars; wait ’til you taste our Red Fire s’mores, Black Pearl s’mores, and what is soon to be a Lauraville tradition: the bacon-bar s’more. We bet you won’t be able to leave without buying some of everything to take home for your own cozy winter nights.

And speaking of miracles… We would certainly be remiss in our duties as the owners of Lauraville’s only candy-store-that-is-also-a-movie-theater if we let an event like Miracle on Main Street go by without bringing you its namesake on the big screen. On the 6th, after you’ve filled your tummy with delicious gourmet chocolate treats, sit back, relax, and watch Miracle on 34th Street. The show starts at 4:00 and seats are only $5.00. As usual, they’re limited, so RSVPing is a must!

The Holiday Fun Doesn’t Stop! We’ll be hosting more bargain holiday matinees later in December. Stay tuned for details!

Rock Candy News: Early Weekend Hours, Anniversary Sale, Theater Rentals, and Freaky Sunday!

Brr!  Thanks to everyone who braved the blustery day and came to our sidewalk sale to take those Peeps ghosts, Voodoo Pops, and Vampire Repelling Garlic Mints off our hands!  Here’s whats new at Rock Candy:

Early Weekend Hours:  By popular demand, we will start opening at 10 a.m. on weekends, beginning Saturday, November 15th.  That day is also the 7th anniversary of Joel and Angela’s first date - wish us a happy anniversary and you’ll get 25% off all the romantic stuff .  Stock up on chocolate dusting powder, body frosting (makes a great ice cream
topping, too!), candy flowers, and mood chocolates!  (We might be extra nice and give you the discount on other stuff, too, if you can convince us it’s romantic.  Try us!  Make a pitch that the gummy tapeworm is romantic!  Our ears are open.  And we’re pretty easily wooed.  Maybe a serenade will persuade us…)

Theater Rentals: Speaking of romance, did you know you can rent the theater for a date?  Someone did this recently, and we thought it was such a great idea that we wanted to let everyone know about it.  Come in and take a look and work out the details!  It’s a great way to spend a chilly evening - grab a bite at one of the fantastic restaurants nearby and then watch the movie of your choice on our big screen, all alone.  You’ll spend less than you would to be crammed in
with 100 strangers at a multiplex.  (And if you really want to impress, we can put together a gift bag full of delicious chocolate - or gummy tapeworm! - and have it waiting for your special someone.) You can also rent the theater for birthday parties, ladies’ nights, guys’ nights, home movie screenings, video game tournaments, or nearly any other occasion you can think of.  Stop by and talk to us and we’ll help make your event affordable and special.

Freaky Sunday: On Sunday the 16th, we’ll be showing both the original Freaky Friday starring Jodie Foster (at noon), and the Lindsay Lohan remake (at 2:00).  The showings are free, and we’ll have popcorn and soda and, of course, candy for sale.  Seating is limited, so please RSVP to info@rockcandybaltimore.com or by calling 443-919-4527.
